Meditation & Dreams: Windows To The Mind & Soul
What is Meditation?
Historically, Siddhartha Gautama (560-480-BC) became Buddha
after he obtained enlightenment while sitting under the Bodhi (fig)
tree. He taught Yoga—‘yoke’ or ‘union’—by way of breath control, in
what is commonly known as meditation. There are various
philosophies of meditation or Yoga’s: Taoist, Hindu, Buddhist, even
Western. Zen, i.e., to ‘wake up’ to your true nature, Buddhism is the
most common form and the one described here with the author’s
[Diana Marie Weitzel] twist which originates from personal
experience.
Through concentration and breath control, meditation is the
window to the subconscious—the long-term storage area of the
mind—and the window to the soul—the divine nature of human
nature. Breath is ‘chi,’ the vital energy of the life force that runs
through the body. Chi is controlled and directed by the mind.
Through focused concentration on breath, meditation can be used to
direct mind—which is limitless—always with the goal of
enlightenment, i.e., truth.
Meditation is the Tao or ‘the Way,’ the path of psychological and
spiritual enlightenment! Silencing the mind and going inward is
where the true knowledge of reality is found. The mind connects with
the soul and its Oneness with the universe. Transcendence of the
physical and experiencing the spiritual transforms the mind into
universal Oneness—Oneness with all that exists. Likened to a drop
of water in the ocean, One is in the all; all is in the One.
Experiencing Oneness improves every area of life. The
psychological, physical, and spiritual healing gained from meditation
makes every aspect of life—work, play, exercise, relationships—
better because there is less stress. Calm is gained that makes
problem-solving easier. One is able to look at every situation
objectively, be more flexible, and handle anger peacefully. Oneness
with the diversity of life stops comparisons, thus the judgments that
cause human suffering. Inner calm comes from the inner light of the
soul which instills strength of character to work well and succeed.
The psychological and physical healing effects from meditation
are enormous. These healing effects are stronger because
meditation is a voluntary act. The body’s innate ability to heal itself
takes place naturally. The mind and soul work together to heal the
body by stimulating the immune system. Negative habits are
replaced by positive habits through focusing the attention on the
positive. Trusting who you are on the inside emerges. Trusting
yourself makes the immune system stronger, a major defense
against disease.
The first key to successful mediation is to make the
subconscious conscious with the goal of psychological
enlightenment. The second key is for the mind to connect with the
soul with the goal of spiritual enlightenment. The soul is the divine
force—the true source of human kind. The natural wisdom innate in
the mind and body can to be used for the highest good only when
there is psychological healing and health, the greatest fault of
humanity ignorance of self-truth. As such, the solution to the mystery
of enlightenment is two fold: understanding the psychology of
human suffering and understanding the meaning of life. Meditation
uses intellectual and spiritual energies as a way to find the answers
to those mysteries and fulfill individual purpose.
Waking up to your soul in daily life through regular meditation
brings spiritual purpose (e.g., wisdom) into every aspect of your life.
When the mind and soul learn to work together the result is a living
meditation, i.e., the living soul. Mind and soul learning to co-create
life is earning Eden. Eden is the manifestation of the miracle of the
living soul!
Meditation teaches that nothing in the entire universe is more
valuable than a single soul, for divine power is living in all people.
The soul [God] is working inside every human being. This
knowledge teaches you to love all of humankind as you learn to love
yourself. Uncover your divine power with meditation and let love and
enlightenment work through you. What each person learns in one
lifetime uplifts the rest of humanity forever. That’s how important
each of us is! That is what meditation is! The miracle of truth . . . the
miracle of us!
How to Meditate?
Find a quiet place where you can be alone and feel at-ease. Put
yourself in a frame-of-mind of no attitude, no expectation or doubt, a
mood of peace. Say a prayer or blessing silently. Begin with any
length meditation that feels comfortable, and then extend it to as
long as is desirable. Every meditation is a little different, so be open
to what the universe offers, physical benefits, psychological health,
and spiritual growth.
1) Lie flat on your back and close your eyes. Place your legs
comfortably together. Leave
your arms limp at your sides with your palms up.
2) Silence your mind. Quiet all thinking. This is the preface of Zen
Buddhism
3) Breath long consistent, complete breaths.
4) Mentally concentrate on your breathing and nothing else.
Think of your breath as being one with the life force that runs through
your body. Breath connects the mind, body, and soul in Oneness.
5) If worries/thoughts come into your mind, let them pass gently
through. Regain focus.
6) Concentration on breathing evens the breath, quieting the
mind. Focus on your breathing until your state-of-mind is completely
free of thought. Focused breathing leads the way to deep meditation,
at which point the breath is almost stilled. Mastering your breathing
is a vehicle to get to the ‘void’ or the ‘other side.’ In the void your mind
and soul connect.7) When your mind and soul connect—which
will happen eventually if you meditate faithfully every day—you will no
longer feel your breathing; it quiets that much. The void is a field of
pure/divine consciousness, a field of all-knowingness and
unconditional love. All suffering is suspended while you are in the
void. In this trance-like state, the mind and soul expand into
Oneness with all souls—Oneness with divine consciousness.
8) Oneness is supreme peace, happiness, bliss—where you
are enlightened psychologically and spiritually. Telepathic
messages and insights are given to you. These revelations are
enlightening you to self-truths and universal truths. Oneness is a
place without limitations where you can travel the universe if you
choose.
Meditation increases your energy level and happiness level in your
daily life. You feel lighter. Everything feels easier because you are
more loving and wise. If you have gone through the process of
psychological healing, i.e., made your subconscious ‘issues’
conscious through meditation or counseling, your life will gradually
become the happily-ever after of your dreams. The Kingdom of
Heaven is Within! Meditation is going within! Connecting with your
soul is heaven meeting earth! Your new enlightened life will be the
experience of the Kingdom of Heaven right here on the Eden called
Earth. That is meditation!
What are Dreams?
As with meditation, dreams are windows to the subconscious
and the soul, power tools of healing, and a way to learn and
experience truth. Dreams can be physiological, psychological,
archetypal symbols, and spiritual—all of which you can interpret
yourself and/or be facilitated by a counselor. All dreams, however,
demand individual interpretation which comes from within.
For example, for one person the image of a snake can represent
fear, for another sexual preference, yet for another kundalini: serpent
power, the raw chi, prana, or the energy that lays dormant at the
base of the spine waiting for the spiritual awakening that allows
kundalini energy to rise up the spine, potentially giving rise to very
high spiritual states.
Types of Dreams
1) Environmental
Sensory experiences—sound, smell, temperature—can make their
way into your dreams. For instance, while you are sleeping a truck
goes by. You dream about trucks, the sound of trucks, etc. You heard
the sound of a truck; you dreamt about a truck. There is no deeper
meaning.
2) Food
What you eat can affect your dreams, as do the thoughts of those
who cook your food. For example, you eat out, go to sleep, and have
very strange dreams that feel nothing like you. The cook may have
been in a very bad mood, or may simply be one of low level of
consciousness, i.e., ignorant. The thoughts of that person affected
the food you ate in a negative way. You ate the food, ingested the
cook’s thoughts and had dreams that felt very strange. Next time you
have a dream that feels nothing like you, try to remember where you
ate and avoid eating there again. There is no deeper meaning to
these dreams. Note: Your thoughts affect the food you prepare and
eat. So, love the food you prepare. Eat only food you love!
3) The Day’s Events
You receive a present during the day and dream about some event
relative to your present. These dreams have no deeper meaning.
4) Emotional
Emotional dreams integrate the day’s experiences into the
subconscious mind. State-of-mind affects dreams. Unresolved
short-term conflicts—hurt feelings, anger—cause dreams that
symbolize those ‘issues.’ The people in your dream may be
metaphors of the issues of that day. Your dream ‘players’ are
showing you the day’s conflicts for you to seek understanding.
Emotional dreams should be understood and resolved as soon as
possible so they go into long-term storage clearly understood. Note:
Another person might be thinking about you. Your dream could be
his or her thoughts, desires, anger, etc., projected into your dream.
5) Psychological
Your mind is made up of thoughts, beliefs, emotions, passions,
missions, habits, actions, and feelings. Together these make up the
psychology of who you are. Your thoughts or judgments about each
event of the day are integrated into the psychology of who you are.
The sleeping mind examines those meanings and compares them
to the rest of your entire life—since birth—and determines if the
meaning that you attributed to any event is consistent with your
overall belief system. Psychological dreams are making your
subconscious conscious. If, for instance, you were abused as a
child and have not gone through the process of psychological
healing, troublesome dreams are likely to be part of your dreams
throughout your life. Dreams are showing you your issues and
helping you understand them. Psychological dreams have very deep
meanings. Correct interpretation and understanding is integral for
psychological healing and health.
6) Spiritual
Dreams that feel more real than reality, dreams that are lucid, clear,
make you feel more whole, and have a loving feeling are spiritual
dreams. These dreams may be prophetic or give direct guidance
about something important in your life. You may be completely
aware you are dreaming. You can direct spiritual dreams with your
mind. For instance, if you want to fly, just fly! Take the information and
inspiration from spiritual dreams very seriously. Act upon their
direction. Bask in the glory of these dreams. Much like meditation,
they are your soul giving you the meaning and purpose of your life!
Dream Analysis Without A Counselor
1) Buy dream dictionaries (more than one). Compare your
interpretations of your dreams
with the books.
2) Start a dream journal. Write down all the people, objects, and
symbols in each dream.
3) Close your eyes and communicate with each person, object,
and symbol. Ask yourself
what each person, object, and symbol has to teach you about
your life.
4) Notice your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about each
person, object, and symbol.
5) Think about what your thoughts and emotions are teaching
you about yourself and how
those feelings relate to the rest of your life.
6) Bring resolution to the dream by understanding yourself
better. Compare your interpre-
tations and understandings with other dreams.
7) If you cannot bring resolution, revisit your dream and recreate
it the way you want.
You’re the boss. You can change the dream any way you want.
Your choices are as
unlimited, so have fun! You are creating your life the way you
want it to be!
Final Thoughts
In Eastern spiritual traditions, our ‘normal’ human
consciousness is seen as a dream. When we ‘wake up’ from a
dream we know we have been asleep. When we ‘wake up’ into
higher levels of consciousness—whether through meditation,
dreams, an extraordinary crisis, or a transcendent event—we realize
our ‘normal’ human consciousness had been a dream . . . as unreal
to the divine mind as a nighttime dream is to the ordinary mind.
When one ‘wakes up’ spiritually and becomes the living soul—
lives daily life in very high states of consciousness—suffering
disappears. One may feel physical pain but does not suffer
emotional or psychological pain. Suffering is seen as totally
unnecessary by the higher consciousness (the soul)—a falsehood
that has been generated by the ego, i.e., defense against feeling the
conditioned fears that are stored in the subconscious. So, along with
meditation, keep a dream journal, and begin waking up to Eden!
